It was snowing when we woke up and how fun is that? Then it kept snowing and didn't stop until about 1 PM. No problem... right? Except according to my well planed itinerary this is the day we leave for Zion. After all we have been at Bryce Canyon for 6 days and have hiked most of the trails that were the distance we like and some we hiked twice so we (Susan) could get pictures with snow on the hoodoos. Still no problem. We would cool it until we were pretty sure the roads would be no problem. So when we felt it was OK to pullout we started "packing up". In a large ArrVee this means bringing in the slides that make the coach wider and roomier. (a little technical lesson here...) The slides have little awning-like covers that retract ... sort of like a window shade. Well the little awnings were covered with snow ... frozen snow. So, since we don't have a long enough ladder with us (a hindsight soon to be remedied) Dave had to go borrow one. He did and even though he stood on the next to the top step (making me very nervous) he was able to scrape off the ice. Also, due to the much colder than we anticipated temperature, the water source to the ArrVee was frozen. Fortunately Dave had unhooked the hose so it didn't freeze but we needed to fill up with water before we headed for Zion as we would not have access to water in the National Park campground. We finally arrived at the solution. We took the little space heater we brought with us outside and made a little tent with the faucet and heater all cozied together and soon the pipe generously gave forth water. We filled up and were on our way
Our trip to Zion was good in that the highway was safe although there was some snow on the road... and it snowed quite a bit of the way. Arriving at Zion we had to go through a tunnel that is 13'8" at the top and around 11" at the sides. Our coach is 12'6". Do the math... this means we can go through the tunnel but need a special pass so that we can drive right down the middle... the edges of the tunnel are too short for us. No problem as they were ready for us (and about a million others like us). But we had to unhitch the car and I drove that while Dave bravely drove by himself down the middle of the tunnel being extremely careful not to get close to the sides and wiping out the side of our ArrVee. Then he had to drive down the steep mountain with many tight hairpin turns by himself. Thankfully we arrived safely and are now all set to enjoy Zion.
