Yesterday... Monday we drove across miles and miles and miles and miles of desert.... the great Mohave... and made it to the lovely town of Bakersfield. We drove through towns like Barstow, Mohave, Boron (20 mule team Borax that made Ronald Reagan famous) and Tehachapi, The first three are out in the desert and not much to write home about. Tehachapi was windy as it always is and why it had 20 million windmills spinning constantly but the hills were green and it was quite beautiful as was the drive down through the foothills.
In Bakersfield we got to spend some time with Kim, my niece and her husband Brett and daughter, Summer. This was a delightful reunion and was so good to just be with them and share what has happened in our lives. I also got to see my brother's wife and have not seen her since Larry (my brother) died. So that was a really good time to be with her and meet her twin brother, Sherman, who, like Sharon, is a very nice person.
We left Bakersfield this morning and stopped in Chowchilla where I was born and raised to see my home which I was relieved to see seems to be well taken care of... then drove on to Sacramento. We made this our destination because we wanted to ride the American River Bike Trail and were able to find a place to camp right on the trail. The trail is all paved and is 33 miles one way. We took a nice ride after we got here toward the north and ended up to our surprise (and not actual planning), in Old Sacramento... It was fun to look around this very well preserved bit of California history. We could have spent more time just looking but we were getting hungry and still had to ride 8 miles back to our ArrVee.
